Best places to Visit in Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland National Park

Pravcicka Gate, Bohemian Switzerland

Pravcicka Gate 

The impressive Pravcicka Gate, is a natural sandstone arch located in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park of the Czech Republic. This is one of Europe’s largest natural sandstone archways, measuring 26,25 meters in width, 16 metres high, and 7-8 meters tall.

The Pravcicka gate was formed by erosion millions of years ago and its current form was created in the last Ice Age. It is a very popular tourist destination that you can hike to. A restaurant and a hotel are also available on-site.

The Pravcicka Gate was featured in many movies, including “The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, where it acted as the entry to Aslan and his army’s base.

To get there you need to get to Hrensko Village just about 30 minutes drive from Bohemian Homes.

Kamenice River hike and Boat Ride

The 35-km long Kamenice River in Bohemian Switzerland National Park, Czech Republic, originates in the Lusatian mountains and merges into the Elbe River in Hrensko. It winds through narrow gorges past towering rock structures, giving visitors an amazing view of the natural beauty in this park.

A boat tour through the canyon is one of Kamenice River Canyon’s major attractions. The guides operate the boat and give information on the geology and the flora of the canyon. This journey takes you through many tunnels such as Edmundova Gorge and Divoka. This is one of the romantic river boat rides in wild settings.

The Kamenice River Gorge is a popular hiking destination. There are several trails that wind along the river and in its surrounding forest. You can see many different species in this protected gorge, including the Daubenton bat, Daubenton kingfisher or Eurasian Otter.

To get there you need to get to Hrensko Village just about 30 minutes drive from Bohemian Homes or go to Mezna Village just 20 minutes drive from Bohemian Homes.

Bastei Bridge, saxon switzerland

Bastei Bridge (Basteibrucke in German)

Bastei Bridge in Germany is a sandstone spanning bridge located within the Saxon Switzerland National Park. The bridge spans a ravine within the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and offers breathtaking views.

The Bastei Bridge was built in 1851 and is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The bridge is 76.5 meters in length and rises 194 meters over the River Elbe. It is made up of numerous sandstone columns that provide stunning views both of the Elbe River, the surrounding rock formations and the dense forest.

The Bastei Bridge is accessible via a number of hiking trails which traverse through the surrounding park. Most popular is the Malerweg. This 112km long distance hike offers stunning views through the Saxon Switzerland National Park. 

Tisa walls/Tiske steny /Tisa labyrinth

Tisa Wall, a rock formation in Bohemian Switzerland of the Czech Republic is an example of a naturally occurring rock. The sandstone walls are made up of hundreds of meters, with the highest point being 80 meters high above sea level.

The rock formations formed by weathering and erosion over many millions of years. This area is popular with rock climbers and hikers because of the numerous climbing and hiking routes.

The Tisa Walls were also used for filming in several films, including “Chronicles of Narnia. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” which featured Aslan’s Army’s last battle with White Witch’s Forces.

Schwedenlocher Gorge

The Schwedenlocher Gorge, located in Germany’s Saxon Switzerland National Park is a narrow canyon that was formed by Krippenbach stream carving its way into sandstone cliffs over many millions of years.

The geology of Schwedenlocher Gorge and the variety of trails winding through it are renowned. The trails range from easy to hard, and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding rock formations.

The “Seven Ladders Trail” is one of the most popular hiking trails in Schwedenlocher. It features seven wooden ladders that help hikers climb steep parts of the gorge. This trail also passes several caves, and offers stunning views from the area.

Schwedenlocher Gorge is named after Swedish soldiers that marched along it in the Thirty Years’ War. It is a popular tourist attraction and has been protected as a national monument.

Mary’s Rock/ Mariina skála in Czech

Mariina skala is a rock formation located in Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic. It was named after a local legend about Mary, who is said to have thrown herself off the top when her lover was killed during the battle.

Mary’s Rock stands approximately 30 meters high and can be accessed via a steep hiking trail that leads to its viewing platform at the summit. From here, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside – including Kamenice River and Bohemian Switzerland National Park’s sandstone cliffs – as well as Mary’s Rock itself.

Mary’s Rock is a popular rock climbing spot, boasting several routes along its sandstone cliffs. This formation lies within the Jetrichovice climbing area, known for its challenging routes and stunning scenery. 

Mary’s Rock is not only stunningly beautiful but home to several endangered species of plants and animals such as the Eurasian eagle-owl and black stork.
